Linda Thompson - Florals

Linda Thompson's work gives a sense of sensuality to flowers by their lines and the use of a rich, complex colouration. The many textures, scrapes and cracks on the canvases are full of expression and movement, giving the appearance that the leaf vein and petal are carved directly onto the canvas.

Date and place of birth
Linda Thompson was born in 1958 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her younger years were spent growing up in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, before immigrating to Canada and settling in Calgary, Alberta in 1997.

In 2006, she moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia where she continues her artistic journey. >>

Training and career
Linda Thompson's formal art training began in 1976 at the College of Art and Design in Durban, South Africa. She was voted Top Student in her final year; qualifying with distinction in Textile Design. She won the coveted Shell Design Consumer Award in 1981 for designing five of the ten award winning fabrics.

While working as the head of a design studio between 1983 and 1989 she began developing her own personal style of painting using a variety of media. Linda continued working as a creative designer incorporating into her work various new techniques resulting in multi-layered unique compositions. As her carreer progressed, Linda began to focus entirely on painting; setting up a Gallery where she was able to exhibit her floral watercolor studies and thereafter concentrating on her larger textured acrylic paintings on canvas. Since her arrival in Canada, she has had gallery representation. Her artwork can now be found in galleries in Eastern and Western Canada.

Her work and her art
The endless possibilities and versatility of acrylics enable Linda Thompson to develop her style by using multiple layers of colour and various textures to create the effects she desires. Her work gives a sense of sensuality to flowers by their lines and the use of a rich, complex colouration. The many textures, scrapes and cracks on the canvases are full of expression and movement, giving the appearance that the leaf vein and petal are carved directly onto the canvas. Linda is inspired by the visual force of nature. She thrives on pattern, design and colour; all of which are very carefully considered in her compositions. Her intention is to stir emotions, to express her feelings and thoughts, to share and above all - grow.
